Antonio Banderas has reportedly joined the cast of Indiana Jones 5 in an unknown role.
Banderas is best known for his starring roles in Desperado, Philadelphia, The Mask of Zorro, Interview with the Vampire, and will appear in Sony’s Uncharted adaptation starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg. He earned his first Oscar nomination for his performance in the 2019 Spanish drama Pain and Glory.
Plot details for the Indiana Jones sequel have been kept under wraps however there have been some rumors that the story could involve a 1960s space race theme.
Previously announced cast includes Harrison Ford as the titular character, Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag), Mads Mikkelsen (Hannibal), Thomas Kretschmann (Avengers: Age of Ultron), Boyd Holbrook (Narcos) and Shaunette Renée Wilson (Black Panther).
John Williams, who has worked on every score in the Indiana Jones franchise, will also return as composer.
James Mangold is directing the film, however, Spielberg will still serve as a producer and is very much involved in the project. Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall, and Simon Emanuel will join Spielberg as producers.
Production on the film was recently put on hold after Ford injured his shoulder while rehearsing a fight scene in the film.
“Indiana Jones 5” is set to release in theaters on July 29, 2022.
