Ashley Romans (Y: The Last Man) has been cast as a series regular in the new medical drama pilot “The Hurt Unit.” Romans will star opposite Ben McKenzie, Michelle Ortiz, Augustus Prew, and Melissa George. She replaces Jaime Lee Kirchner (Bull) who had been initially cast in the pilot.
“The Hurt Unit” was ordered to pilot last December at ABC and follows a highly skilled team of trauma surgeons and nurses led by Danny (McKenzie), a self-made surgeon, who race into the field to treat the patients who won’t make it to the hospital in time. When the sick and the injured can’t get to the ER, the Hurt Unit (Hospital Urgent Response Team) brings the ER to them.
According to Deadline, Kirchner exited over creative differences during production. Her scenes will be reshot with Romans. Romans will play Nora, a surgeon from working-class roots who got her education by joining the Navy, serving as a trauma surgeon in multiple war zones. She wants to join Dr. Danny Marsh’s (McKenzie) elite HURT Unit, and although she’s nearly as brilliant a surgeon as he is, he won’t have her on his team until she levels with him about her troubled past.
The project comes from Matt Lopez (Promised Land) and John Glenn ( SEAL Team). Director Marc Webb (The Amazing Spider-Man, (500) Days of Summer) will helm the pilot.
Lope and Glenn will write and exec produce with Webb also exec producing.
If “The Hurt Unit” gets a series order, the show will air on ABC and stream on Hulu in the United States. We also expect the show to arrive on Disney+ internationally.
Romans’ credits include FX’s Y: The Last Man, AMC’s NOS4A2, Showtime’s Shameless.
