Benedict Cumberbatch & Olivia Colman to Star in ‘War of the Roses’ Remake at Searchlight

Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game) and Olivia Colman (The Favourite) will star in and produce Searchlight Pictures‘ “The Roses,” a reimagining of the 1989 drama film “The War of the Roses.”

Jay Roach (Bombshell) is on board to direct the dark comedy on a screenplay by Tony McNamara, who recently earned his second Oscar nomination for the screenplay to Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things.”

The two actors are set to play Theo and Ivy, a couple with a seemingly ideal, picture-perfect life that comes crashing down when Theo’s professional career takes a significant downturn. That unleashes a wave of competition and resentment.

Cumberbatch is producing under his SunnyMarch banner with the company’s Leah Clarke and Adam Ackland. Colman will produce under her South of the River banner with partners Ed Sinclair and Tom Carver. Roach and Michelle Graham are also producing.

Jonathan R. Adler and Michael Adler, from Adler Entertainment Trust, are executive producing.

“The War of the Roses” was released in 1989 and was directed by Danny DeVito and starred Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner.  The film earned a BAFTA and three Golden Globe nominations.
