It’s been a long time since we’ve heard anything about the “Monsters at Work” animated series coming to Disney+. Back in April of 2019, it was announced that Billy Crystal and John Goodman would reprise their beloved roles as Mike and Sulley in the series, but since then news on the project has been very quiet….until now!
Billy Crystal recently gave an interview with Collider and gave an update on the series. During the interview with Steve Weintraub, Crystal confirmed “Monsters at Work” is a series of episodes, that he and John Goodman are in the midst of working on, and he confirmed when the series takes place. Here’s what he had to say,
“It’s a series. John Goodman and I are Sully and Mike. The show, time-wise, starts six months after ‘Monsters, Inc.’ ended. So now, we’re on the Laugh Floor. We’ve created all of the new, young, great characters with some great voice actors, and John and I are reprising our parts. I tell ya, it’s [been] 20 years [since the release of ‘Monsters, Inc.’] and that movie looked amazing 20 years ago. It’s coming up to the 20th anniversary, I believe in September. It’s fantastic looking, it’s hilarious, and we’re having a lot of fun doing it.”
The actor also confirmed that several episodes had already been completed.
“We’ve done a bunch [of episodes]. We’ve been on a break because of the pandemic. But some I was able to do at home and some I was able to do in a very deserted studio out in Burbank. To be the only one on the lot was a little weird. But yeah, we’re progressing. I don’t know when they’re gonna start [being released] but I promise you they’re really good.“
“Monsters At Work” follows Tylor Tuskmon (voiced by Ben Feldman), an eager and talented young mechanic on the Monsters, Inc. Facilities Team (MIFT) who dreams of working his way up to the factory Laugh Floor to become a Jokester alongside his idols Mike and Sulley.
Starring alongside Feldman (“Superstore”) is Kelly Marie Tran (“Star Wars: The Last Jedi”) as Val Little, Tylor’s lifelong friend and confidante; Henry Winkler (“Barry”) as Fritz, the scatterbrained boss; Lucas Neff (“Raising Hope”) as Duncan, an opportunistic plumber; Alanna Ubach (“Coco”) as Cutter, the officious rule follower; and Stephen Stanton (“Star Wars Resistance”) as Smitty and Needleman, the bumbling custodial team. Aisha Tyler (“Archer”) voices Tylor’s mom, Millie Tuskmon.
In addition to Crystal and Goodman, returning cast members from the original movies include John Ratzenberger as Yeti and the new character, Bernard; Jennifer Tilly as Celia Mae; and Bob Peterson as Roze, twin sister to his original Monsters, Inc. character, Roz.
Produced by Disney Television Animation, the series was developed and is executive produced by Disney animation veteran Bobs Gannaway (“Mickey Mouse Clubhouse,” “Planes: Fire & Rescue”) with Ferrell Barron (“Planes: Fire & Rescue”) serving as producer. Kat Good (“Penn Zero: Part-Time Hero”) and Rob Gibbs (“Monsters, Inc.”) are directors.
“Monsters at Work” is expected to premiere on Disney+ in 2021.
