Bob Chapek Confirms Marvel’s ‘Shang-Chi’ Will Release Only In Theaters

Today, during the Walt Disney Company Q3 earnings call, Disney CEO Bob Chapek confirmed that Marvel’s upcoming film “Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” will release only in theaters on September 3rd.

There has been recent speculation that Disney could consider releasing “Shang-Chi” in theaters and on Disney+ Premier Access due to concerns over the COVID-19 Delta variant and the success “Black Widow” had with its hybrid release.

Chapek put those rumors to rest by saying,

“On ‘Shang-Chi,’ we think it’s going to be an interesting experiment. The prospect of taking a Marvel title to [Disney+] after just 45 days would be an interesting data point.”

“Shang-Chi” follows the title character who must confront the past he thought he left behind when he is drawn into the web of the mysterious Ten Rings organization.

The film is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and produced by Kevin Feige and Jonathan Schwartz, with Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, and Charles Newirth serving as executive producers. David Callaham & Destin Daniel Cretton & Andrew Lanham wrote the screenplay for the film.

The movie stars Simu Liu, Tony Leung as Wenwu, Awkwafina as Shang-Chi’s friend Katy, and Michelle Yeoh as Jiang Nan, as well as Fala Chen, Meng’er Zhang, Florian Munteanu, and Ronny Chieng.
