Catherine Zeta-Jones Reportedly In Talks To Play Villain In ‘National Treasure’ Disney+ Series

“National Treasure” has made an offer to Catherine Zeta-Jones to play the villain in the upcoming Disney+ series.

The new series is a reimagining of the National Treasure franchise.  The show follows a character named Jess Morales (Alexis), a twenty-year-old dreamer who, with her diverse group of friends, sets off on the adventure of a lifetime to uncover her mysterious family history and recover lost treasure.  The series will also reportedly explore the timely issues of identity, community, historical authorship, and patriotism.

Lisette Alexis (Total Eclipse) has signed on for the lead role in the series.  The story will center on Jess (Alexis), a Latina whose brilliant and resourceful mind loves a good mystery, and she has a natural talent for solving puzzles. Over the course of the show, Jess will uncover her own buried history, as well as the truth about her parents and her connection to a long-lost treasure.

According to The Illuminerdi, Zeta-Jones will play Jess’s adversary, Billie. Billie is a ruthless crypto-currency billionaire who went from rags to riches thanks to her steadfast determination which she has now focused on acquiring the Pan-American treasure. She may play by her own rules, but she knows her history and has the resources and fluid morality to get what she wants at all costs. It is implied there are others also looking for the treasure, but Billie will be realized as the biggest competitor very quickly.

The Illuminerdi also reports that the series has cast Zuri Reed as Tasha. Tasha is a keep-to-herself social media personality with a knack for technology. She uses her platform to fight for the people against large corporations and governments. Tash and Jess have been best friends since they met at a ritzy private school, where they were both were left out because they were there on scholarship. Tasha is not fully on board with the agency Jess is working with, but won’t let their clashing views get in the way of being ride-or-die for her best friend.

The pilot will be written by Marianne and Cormac Wibberley.  Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Mira Nair (Queen of Katwe) is attached to direct.

The series comes from the original films’ producer Jerry Bruckheimer and original writers Marianne and Cormac Wibberley.  The Wibberleys will also executive produce with Jerry Bruckheimer Television. ABC Signature is the studio.

“National Treasure” will reportedly consist of 10 episodes and begin production in early 2022 Baton Rouge, Louisiana.  A Disney+ release date for the series has not been announced yet.
