Oscar nominated writing team Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo are teaming up again to pen a live action movie for Disney based on Cinderella’s evil step-sisters. It’s unknown at this point whether or not Wiig and Mumolo will also star in the film. Sources say that the film will focus on a younger version of the sisters, so even if the pair were to star, it likely wont be in the lead roles.
The film is set to be a fairytale musical comedy that re-imagines the Cinderella story from the point of view of her infamous stepsisters. The story will cover their early life, through the marriage of their stepsister Cinderella and beyond, as they struggle to uphold their family’s legacy.
Wiig and Mumolo were nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for the film Bridesmaids. The pair are currently in the early stages of writing the as yet untitled Cinderella film, which will be produced by Jessica Elbaum and Will Ferrell.
The movie follows the path that Disney are taking, by putting villains front and centre of its live-action projects. Cruella, starring Emma Stone is released next month, and a Beauty and the Beast prequel TV series for Disney+ is in development titled Gaston and LeFou, not forgetting Sleeping Beauty villain Maleficent, who was given 2 live-action movies .
Expect more news on this exciting new project, as and when more developments occur.
