Danny DeVito has joined the new “Haunted Mansion” live-action movie, based on the iconic Disneyland attraction. He will star opposite Rosario Dawson, Owen Wilson, LaKeith Stanfield and Tiffany Haddish in the film as a smug professor.
According to The Illuminerdi, the story details are as follows: Gabbie, a single mother, and her young son recently purchased a New Orleans estate at auction only to discover it isn’t quite as empty as they expected. Gabbie hires a grieving widower who works as a ghost tour guide, a psychic, a priest, and a local historian to exorcise the vengeful spirit from the Haunted Mansion.
DeVito is a legendary comedic actor whose credits include the 1970s TV series Taxi, Romancing the Stone, Batman Returns, and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
Justin Simien (Dear White People) has been tapped to direct the upcoming film. Katie Dippold (Ghostbusters 2016) is attached to write the script. Producers are Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich through their Rideback banner. The team also worked on Disney’s live-action Aladdin movie and the upcoming Lilo & Stitch remake.
“Haunted Mansion” began production last week in New Orleans and Atlanta and is intended for a theatrical release.
This isn’t the first movie based on the 51-year old ride. In 2003, Disney released the horror comedy “The Haunted Mansion” with Eddie Murphy portraying a workaholic realtor who buys a mansion that turns out to be haunted. The movie, directed by Rob Minkoff, grossed $182 million worldwide on a $90 million budget.
The original “Haunted Mansion” starring Eddie Murphy is available to stream now on Disney+.
