Disney Closing 18 Channels in Asia to Focus on Disney+

Beginning October 1, 2021, Disney will reportedly close 18 of its television channels in Southeast Asia including Singapore and Hong Kong.  The closure comes as Disney tries to shift focus to its streaming service Disney+.

Disney provided the following statement to employees, “As part of The Walt Disney Company’s global effort to pivot towards a D2Cfirst model and further grow our streaming services, the company is consolidating its Media Networks business primarily in Southeast Asia and Hong Kong. These efforts will help us align our resources more efficiently and effectively to current and future business needs.”

The following channels will be closing down:

  • Fox
  • Fox Crime
  • Fox Life
  • FX
  • Fox Action Movies
  • Fox Family Movies
  • Fox Movies
  • Star Movies China
  • Fox Sports
  • Fox Sports 2
  • Fox Sports 3
  • Star Sports
  • Star Sports 2
  • Disney Channel
  • Disney Junior
  • Nat Geo People
  • SCM Legend

Four channels will remain available:

  • Star Chinese Channel
  • Star Chinese Movies
  • National Geographic Channel
  • Nat Geo Wild

Last year at the same time, Disney Channel, Disney XD and Disney Junior were similarily taken off the air in the UK.
