Starting from May 27, a number of titles have been taken down from Disney’s streaming services worldwide.
These include Disney+ shows such as Willow, Big Shot, Turner & Hooch, The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, Just Beyond, Diary of a Future President, The Mysterious Benedict Society, and The World According To Jeff Goldblum. In addition, Hulu series including Y: The Last Man, Dollface, The Hot Zone, Maggie, Pistol, and Little Demon will also be removed.
Deadline recently revealed that certain titles, previously scheduled for removal, will continue to be available on Disney+ after a review of the content.
Disney has experienced considerable backlash, especially for Howard, leading them to reverse some of the earlier removal decisions.
No Longer Leaving Disney+:
The following titles are no longer leaving Disney+:
- A Pixar Spark Story
- Marvel’s Voice Rising: The Music Of Wakanda Forever
- Howard
- MPower
- More Than Robots
- Weird But True!
Should there be any changes, like any previously announced titles slated for removal being retained, we will update this list accordingly.
Deadline quotes a Disney representative as saying “The list of titles coming off of Hulu and Disney+ next week is still being finalized.” This suggests there may be more adjustments over the coming days.
The move, which comes with a content impairment charge of $1.5 billion to $1.8 billion, was announced during the recent Disney earnings call on May 10.
An impairment charge refers to the accounting method used when an asset’s current market value has fallen below its original cost or book value, indicating that it has lost some of its initial worth. In other words, Disney is choosing to write off this content.
CFO Christine McCarthy said:
“We are in the process of reviewing the content on our DTC services to align with the strategic changes in our approach to content curation”.
