Disney+ has now reached 54.5 million subscribers worldwide. The news was announced yesterday when The Walt Disney Company unveiled its quarterly earnings. The subscriber update for the streaming service marks a gain of 4.5 million since April 8, when Disney shared it had topped 50 million subscribers.
The boost in subscribers is attributed to the launch of Disney+ in European countries and the rebranding of Hotstar in India, to Disney+ Hotstar, along with people needing entertainment as they adhere to stay at home orders due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Our company’s top priority and the key to our growth is our direct to consumer (assets),” Chapek said in his first earnings call with Wall Street since becoming CEO.
The Disney+ subscriber number is expected to grow even more as the Nordic countries, Belgium, Luxembourg and Portugal are next up for expansion.
