In “Cristóbal Balenciaga,” actor Alberto San Juan plays Cristóbal Balenciaga, an enigmatic and extraordinarily talented man who defied the social conventions of the time and revolutionized the world of fashion. The story begins as the designer presents his first Parisian Haute Couture collection in 1937. He has left behind a successful career in his ateliers in Madrid and San Sebastian dressing the Spanish elite and aristocracy. However, the designs that had set the trend in Spain don’t quite work in the sophisticated fashion empire that Paris has become, where Chanel, Dior and Givenchy are the benchmark of Haute Couture. Guided by his obsession for control in all aspects of his life, Cristóbal Balenciaga will define his style and eventually become one of the most important designers of all time.
The series stars Alberto San Juan and an international cast of actors who bring to life renowned characters of the 20th century. Among them are Belén Cuesta (Fabiola de Mora y Aragón); Josean Bengoetxea (San Sebastian businessman Nicolás Bizkarrondo); Cecilia Solaguren (his wife, Virgilia Mendizabal); Adam Quintero (Ramón Esparza, collaborator); Thomas Coumans (Wladzio D’Attainville, Cristóbal Balenciaga’s partner and business partner); Gemma Whelan (Prudence Glynn, journalist for The Times); Anouk Grinberg (Coco Chanel); Gabrielle Lazure (Carmel Snow, fashion director of Harper’s Bazaar); Patrice Thibaud (Christian Dior); Nine d’Urso (model Colette); and Anna-Victoire Olivier (actress Audrey Hepburn).
The show was created by Lourdes Iglesias and 12-time Goya award winners Aitor Arregi, Jon Garaño, and Jose Mari Goenaga (“The Endless Trench”).
