Gael Garcia Bernal Rumored To Play Jack Russell in Marvel’s ‘Werewolf By Night’ Disney+ Special

Last month,  The Wrap reported that Gael Garcia Bernal had been cast in a lead role in Marvel’s upcoming “Werewolf By Night” Halloween special that’s in development for Disney+.

Like all Marvel projects, plot details are being kept under wraps however some believe the character may be based on “Werewolf by Night,” the name used by two separate Marvel characters in the Marvel comic books.

Jack Russell was the original version who has the ability to turn into a werewolf without a full moon. Russell first appeared in the 1970s in an episode of Moon Knight so there has been some speculation the character could make his debut in Marvel’s upcoming Moon Knight series for Disney+.

Jack Gomez is the later version of the character and is from the Hopi Native American tribe whose family has been cursed by lycanthropy.

According to a new report from The Illuminerdi, Bernal could potentially be playing the Jack Russell incarnation of the character. The article also reports that Nina Price / Vampire By Night, a vampire-werewolf hybrid who is Russell’s niece in the comics, might also be making an appearance.

Bernal most recently starred in HBO Max’s “Station Eleven,” M. Night Shyamalan’s “Old,” Pablo Larraín’s “Ema” and “Wasp Network” for Netflix. He won a Golden Globe for his role as Rodrigo in “Mozart in the Jungle.”

Production on “Werewolf by Night” is slated to begin In February under the working title “Buzzcut” and is expected to finish filming in March.

“Werewolf by Night” will be the second holiday MCU special in development for Disney+. A Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special written and directed by James Gunn is also expected to premiere later next year.
