High School Musical: The Series – Season 2 Review (Spoiler Free)

High School Musical: The Musical: The Series returns to Disney+ this week, with its second season! Picking up straight after the group’s “High School Musical” performance, episode one begins with a brilliant opening song setting the tone for what’s to come.

Season two follows a slightly different format to the first season. It is no longer focused on stage productions of the HSM franchise; instead, East High puts on a production of Beauty and the Beast in their newly renovated theatre.

A competitive edge is added this season in a rivalry between East High and North High, whose musical theatre teacher happens to be Miss Jenn’s ex. We also get an introduction to the new girl Lily, who looks to be a funny addition to the cast.

The cast is really likeable, as they were during season one. There’s real genuine energy to the series that each character contributes to; seeing the energy from season one carries over into the first few episodes of season 2 is certainly promising.

There are some great group performances during the first three episodes and some really nice solo numbers, which showcase the talents of the actors. This series seems to focus on the wider group of characters and their relationships which fits in well. There is more than just relationships and musical theatre being explored, though, with plots that run throughout exploring the insecurities of teenage life. Disney seems to have this kind of drama locked in, with shows like ‘Big Shot’ and ‘Mighty Ducks’ looking at similar themes.

Each episode comes in at around 30 minutes which feels just right for this kind of series; it’s an easy watch and very entertaining. Another thing that Disney has got right is the format they’ve gone with on the show. It’s not a simple remake, far from it, and it still manages to retain all of the charm and nostalgia that fans love about the original franchise.

Disney know exactly what they’re doing with this series, it certainly is cheesy, but that isn’t a bad thing. I enjoyed the three episodes that I was shown, far more than I expected to. It kept me entertained from start to finish, and it stands out as being one of the best Disney+ originals to hit the streaming service so far.

I’d rate High School Musical: The Musical: The Series – Season 2 a strong 4 out of 5 stars and will be looking forward to seeing more episodes.

The first episode of season 2 of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is available to stream on Disney+ from Friday 14th May; new episodes will release weekly.
