Is Royce Johnson Returning for Marvel’s ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Disney+ Series?

Filming on Marvel’s upcoming “Daredevil: Born Again” Disney+ series is set to begin soon in New York and a new rumor is fueling an actor’s return from the original Daredevil series.

Royce Johnson, who portrayed New York Police Department officer Brett Mahoney in several episodes of Marvel’s Daredevil and Jessica Jones, posted a cryptic picture of himself on Instagram wearing a police uniform, with the caption “…somewhere in New York:” You can see that post below:

Of course, the new image led to speculation from fans on Instagram that he could return as Brett Mahoney in “Daredevil: Born Again.” Marvel has not confirmed Johnson’s return to the new series so this is purely just speculation.

Last July, during the Marvel Studios panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios, announced that “Daredevil: Born Again” an Original series starring Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio, would be coming to Disney+ in Spring 2024.

Cox originally played Matt Murdock/Daredevil in the Marvel series on Netflix from 2015 to 2018.  He also appeared in the spinoff series, The Defenders. Most recently his character had a cameo appearance in Marvel’s Spider-Man: No Way Home and She-Hulk Attorney at Law.

Vincent D’Onofrio who played Wilson Fisk in the original “Daredevil” series recently reprised his role as Kingpin, in the Disney+ series Hawkeye.  The two will also reprise their roles in the upcoming Echo series on Disney+ which is set to premiere in Summer of 2023.

Sopranos prequel actor Michael Gandolfini (The Many Saints of Newark) has joined the cast of Born Again in a major role and Margarita Levieva (The Deuce) and Sandrine Holt (American Gigolo) have also boarded the series and could be playing love interests for the leads.  Nikki M. James (The Book of Mormon) has also been cast in an undisclosed role.  The Flight Attendant star, Colin Woodell is rumored for the series as well.

The series will be written and executive produced by Covert Affairs creators Matt Corman and Chris Ord.

Filming is set to begin in New York City in February and continue through December 2023.  It was previously revealed that the project will be filming under the working title “Out the Kitchen” under the production company Blind Faith Productions LLC.

Season 1 will consist of 18 episodes and will premiere on Disney+ in Spring 2024.
