Isabela Merced has reportedly joined the cast of 20th Century Studios’ new Alien movie with the working title “Alien: Romulus.” Merced is set to co-star opposite Cailee Spaeny.
In the new film, the iconic ferocious race of alien beings called Xenomorphs will be front and center, again reigning terror against the humans that cross their paths.
According to The Ronin, cinematographer Galo Olivares has boarded the project. Olivares has previously worked on Gretel & Hansel along with being part of the camera team on the Oscar-winning drama Roma from Mexican director Alfonso Cuarón.
Fede Alvarez (Don’t Breathe) is directing the project with Scott Free producing.
Filming on the project is expected to begin soon in Budapest, Hungary.
A release date for the film has not been announced yet.
Merced recently starred as Juliet in 20th Century Studios’ feature film Rosaline which is available to stream now on Hulu in the US and on Disney+ in many countries including the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia. She is also set to star alongside Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney in Sony Pictures’ Marvel’s Madame Web.
FX is also developing an Alien TV series which will release on Hulu in the United States and on Disney+ internationally under the Star banner.
The project was first announced during Disney’s Investor Day presentation in 2020 and will be the first television series based on one of the greatest science fiction horror classics ever made.
The series will be helmed by Fargo and Legion’s Noah Hawley and Ridley Scott will produce the series via his Scott Free banner.
The show will be the first Alien story set on Earth and will blend the horror of the original 1979 movie and the action of the 1986 James Cameron-directed sequel, Aliens. The Alien series will take place before Weaver’s Ripley character appears and she will not be part of the show, as will none of the characters apart from the alien itself.
Noah Hawley has delivered all of the scripts and filming will reportedly begin next year. A release date has not been announced yet but it previously stated that the series could potentially debut in 2023.
