James Newton Howard has signed on to compose the score for the upcoming Disney+ “Willow” series. Howard has scored several films for The Walt Disney Company including Atlantis: The Lost Empire, Treasure Planet, Maleficent, The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, and most recently Raya and the Last Dragon, Jungle Cruise.
“Willow”, set decades after Ron Howard’s 1988 movie, continues the spirit of adventure, heroics and humor of the original film. Warwick Davis will return in the role of the great sorcerer, Willow Ufgood. Amer Chadha-Patel (Aladdin), Ruby Cruz (Mare of Easttown), Erin Kellyman (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Solo: A Star Wars Story), Ellie Bamber (Nocturnal Animals), Tony Revolori (Spider-Man: Far From Home), and Cailee Spaeny (The Craft: Legacy) are all set to star alongside Davis.
Stephen Woolfenden (Outlander) has been tapped to direct the series.
Kathleen Kennedy, Michelle Rejwan, Jonathan Kasdan, Wendy Mericle, Ron Howard and Imagine Television will serve as executive producers, with Roopesh Parekh and Hannah Friedman as co-executive producers. Additionally, Bob Dolman will serve as consulting producer with Julia Cooperman as producer.
Filming is currently underway on the 8-episode series in Wales.
“Willow” is slated to premiere on Disney+ in 2022.
