Disney announced a “Moana” animated musical series for Disney+ during Disney’s Investor Day in December 2020. We’ve heard little about the project since then but Jennifer Lee, Walt Disney Animation Studios’ chief creative officer, recently shared an update regarding the series.
In a recent interview with eCartelera, Lee said the following:
“I love that Disney+ allows us to introduce experimentation and freshness while also exploring our legacy. Combining celebration and narrative innovation. In that sense we can play more with the Disney+ series. We’re doing the ‘Moana’ series and it’s been a lot of fun, I love it….”
David G. Derrick Jr. is set to direct the upcoming “Moana” musical series for Disney+ which will also reportedly serve as a sequel for the animated film. “Moana” producer, Osnat Shurer, serves as producer on the series.
A release date for the “Moana” animated series has not been announced yet, but it is expected to premiere on Disney+ in 2024.
Disney is also developing a live-action version of the “Moana” animated film which is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on June 27, 2025.
