In true “Big Sky” fashion, last fall’s No. 1 new series returned to ABC’s Summer TCA Virtual Press Conferences with a surprise when fan favorite John Carroll Lynch joined the panel to announce he would be returning for season two. Details on his return are under wraps. Lynch played the character Montana state trooper Rick Legarski in Season 1. Legarski was shot in the head in the Season 1 finale however it was mentioned in the first season that Legarski has a twin.
The series is based on The Highway series of books by C.J. Box. In Season 2, when private detectives Cassie Dewell (Bunbury) and Jenny Hoyt (Winnick) reunite to investigate a car wreck outside of Helena, Montana, they soon discover that the case may not be as straightforward as it seems. As they unravel the mystery of the accident, their worlds will collide with a band of unsuspecting teens, a flirtatious face from Jenny’s past, and a vicious outsider hellbent on finding answers.
Cast also includes series regulars Janina Gavankar, Logan Marshall-Green, Brian Geraghty and Dedee Pfeiffer as well as Omar Metwally and Anja Savcic, who have been promoted from recurring to regulars for Season 2, and Jesse James Keitel, a series regular in season 1 who will recur in Season 2.
Newly announced cast members include Jamie Lynn-Sigler (The Sopranos), Madelyn Kientz (The Walking Dead: World Beyond), Troy Johnson (On My Block), Lola Reid (Barkskins), Jeremy Taylor (It films) TV Carpio (Spiderman: Turn Off The Dark) and Arturo Del Puerto (Camping).
Elwood Reid (The Chi, The Bridge, Barkskins) has been set as showrunner for Season 2. He takes over running the show from series creator and executive producer David E. Kelley who will remain as an exec producer and will still be involved creatively.
Production on Season 2 is set to begin in August 2021 and continue through April 2022 in Rio Rancho, New Mexico.
Season two of “Big Sky” premieres Thursday, September 30 (10:01-11:00 p.m. EDT), on ABC and will stream the next day on Hulu in the United States. A release date for Season 2 for Star on Disney+ has not been announced yet.
