Kevin Feige and Patty Jenkins Star Wars Movies Reportedly On Hold While Taika Waititi’s and Damon Lindelof’s Films Move Forward

Variety is reporting some new details about several Star Wars movies that were in development at Lucasfilm. According to the new report, Kevin Feige’s and Patty Jenkins’ Star Wars projects have been shelved while Taika Waititi’s and Damon Lindelof’s films are full steam ahead.

Patty Jenkin’s Star Wars: Rogue Squadron film was first announced in 2020 and was scheduled to release in theaters in December 2023. Due to scheduling conflicts with Jenkins, the project was put on the back burner and last September the film had been removed from Disney’s release calendar.  Variety reports that sources with knowledge of the production say it is no longer in active development at the studio however Lucasfilm has not confirmed this.

The outlet also reports that the possible Star Wars feature produced by Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige is also no longer in active development at Lucasfilm.

Rian Johnson, who wrote and directed Star Wars: The Last Jedi, was also said to be developing his own Star Wars film however Johnson has many projects he’s currently working on which will keep him occupied for the foreseeable future.

Academy Award winner Taika Waititi is directing and co-writing a Star Wars feature film with co-writer Krysty Wilson-Cairns. It’s believed that Waititi’s film could release in theaters in December 2025.  Variety reports that he would most likely have a part in it as well, similar in prominence to his standout role as an imaginary Adolf Hitler in his Oscar-winning 2019 feature “Jojo Rabbit.”

Another contender for the December 2025 Star Wars release slot is Damon Lindelof’s (Lost, Watchmen) film.  Lindelof will co-write the new movie along with Justin Britt-Gibson (The Strain).  Plot details for the new film are being kept under wraps however it will be set after the events of Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker. The film is not a continuation of the Skywalker Saga but could feature characters who were introduced in the sequel trilogy.  Oscar-winner and Ms. Marvel director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is also reportedly attached to helm the project.

Lucasfilm is expected to reveal its plans for the future at Star Wars Celebration 2023 which takes place the weekend of April 7th in London. Lucasfilm’s Studios Showcase panel is scheduled for Friday, April 7, 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM British Summer time.
