Lauren Tom Joins ‘Interior Chinatown’ Series

Lauren Tom (The Joy Luck Club) has joined the cast of “Interior Chinatown,” a new drama series based on the award-winning book by Charles Yu.

“Interior Chinatown” tells the story of Willis Wu (Jimmy O. Yang), a background character trapped in a police procedural who is trying to find his way into the larger story — and along the way discovers secrets about the strange world he inhabits and his family’s buried history.

According to Deadline, Tom will recur as Betty, a successful real estate agent with a sharp suit and sharper tongue. When her assistant drags her out to look at an abandoned laundromat in Chinatown, Betty is clearly irritated, but her attitude changes when she sees her old friend (and new rival), Lily Wu.

Jimmy O. Yang (Crazy Rich Asians), Ronny Chieng, Chloe Bennet, Sullivan Jones (Atlanta),  Lisa Gilroy (Netflix’s Glamourous), Diana Lin, Archie Kaohave, and Tzi Ma will also star in the project.

Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit) will direct the pilot episode and executive produce.

The series hails from 20th Television and Creator/Exec Producer Charles Yu.

Rideback, Participant and Dive are exec producing. Dan Lin, Lindsey Liberatore, and Elsie Choi will EP for Ridgeback; Jeff Skill and Miura Kite will EP for Participant, and Garrett Basch will EP for Dive.

The 10-episode series will release on Hulu in the US, on Star+ in Latin America, and on Disney+ in all other territories.

Tom’s additional credits include Andi MackTrollhunters and Goliath.
