Disney is currently working on a sequel to last summer’s live-action version of Aladdin. The film will be a theatrical release and not a Disney Plus title.
According to Variety, producers spent the last six months trying to figure out what direction to take on the next film, and they finally found their path.
The project is in early development, but we do know John Gatins (Flight, Real Steel) and Andrea Berloff (Straight Outta Compton, The Kitchen) will write the script. We also know Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich will return as producers while Ryan Halprin will serve as executive producer. There is no word whether or not Guy Ritchie will return to direct the film or if stars Will Smith, Mena Massoud and Naomi Scott will reprise their roles as well.
2019’s Aladdin was a blockbuster hit, becoming only the fourth live-action adaptation to cross the billion-dollar global box office milestone, joining “The Lion King,” “Beauty and the Beast” and “Alice in Wonderland.”
The sequel marks the second follow-up in development to the film, with a spin-off focused on Billy Magnussen’s Prince Anders is in development for release on Disney+.
