“Doctor Who” showrunner Russell T. Davies recently confirmed that spin-offs of the show are in the works as part of an expanded ‘Whoniverse.’
Last October, it was announced that the BBC and Disney Branded Television – two giants of entertainment – have come together to transform Doctor Who into a global franchise for UK audiences and the rest of the world. Under a shared creative vision, they will deliver this quintessentially British show to future generations on an unprecedented scale with Disney+ as the exclusive home for new seasons of Doctor Who outside the UK and Ireland.
The three-part Doctor Who 60th anniversary special will air in November 2023, followed by the debut of Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor in 2024. Doctor Who Season 14 will be the first new season of Doctor Who, following the anniversary specials.
Previously announced cast includes Catherine Tate, Yasmin Finney, Neil Patrick Harris, Jacqueline King, Karl Collins and Ruth Madeley.
Recently announced cast includes Jemma Redgrave and Anuerin Barnard. Jemma Redgrave will return as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, as will UNIT, the organization that seeks to defend Earth from extraterrestrial threats. Aneurin Barnard joins the series as Roger ap Gwilliam. Anita Dobson (EastEnders) and Michelle Greenidge (Venom: Let There Be Carnage) have also boarded the cast.
Some new details have been revealed about the upcoming “Doctor Who” spinoff series which will be based on military research organization UNIT and will star Redgrave as Kate Stewart. Redgrave has played Stewart in 10 episodes of Doctor Who since 2012 and the spin-off will focus on her running of the unit, which has appeared on and off in Doctor Who for the past 50 years, Deadline reports. She will also appear in the Doctor Who Christmas special later this year, which will be the first to feature new doctor Ncuti Gatwa along with returns for David Tennant and Catherine Tate.
In a recent interview, Davies shared that Episode 4 from Season 15 featuring Jemma Redgrave is “one of the greatest things I’ve ever made in my life.” He added, “I am very, very happy with it,”
