Over 100 Disney Movies Removed From Disney+

Disney has removed over 130 titles from Disney+ in the United Kingdom and across the EMEA region, which consists of Europe, the Middle East and Africa. However, this action does not affect the United States at this time.

Although it is not rare for Disney to remove specific titles from Disney+ in the United States, as evidenced by a few removals in early February, witnessing such removals internationally is unusual. A few titles do come and go in countries such as the United Kingdom, but this is not as consistent as in the United States. Nonetheless, similar mass removals have occurred on multiple occasions in the past.

Last May,Disney removal of hundreds of titles as a cost-cutting measure. This included shows like Willow, Big Shot, Turner & Hooch, The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, Just Beyond, Diary of a Future President, The Mysterious Benedict Society, and many more. These removals resulted in a content impairment charge exceeding $2 billion to write down the content.

However, in this new case of removals, Disney made no announcement that these titles were being taken down from the platform.

The titles removed are a mix of Disney movies, Disney Channel Original movies, ESPN documentaries, and National Geographic titles. You can see all the titles that have been removed below.

Why Were These Movies Removed?

Officially, Disney has not commented on the reasons for removing these titles from Disney+, including whether there are any plans for their return.

In the past, we have seen many titles being removed and then reappearing a few days later, which we assumed was due to a glitch. Therefore, there is a possibility that they might return.

However, it is also not uncommon for Disney to remove titles, either because the titles have been licensed to other streaming services or as a cost-reduction measure.

By removing certain titles, Disney can save on ongoing residual payments and licensing fees, reducing their operational costs. Additionally, Disney might remove some content to forge licensing agreements with other platforms like Netflix or HBO, creating an additional revenue stream. This strategy has recently been observed in their dealings with Netflix. However, given the age of these movies, it’s more likely that they will be made available for digital purchase rather than appearing on another streaming service.

The noticeable age of these titles suggests that the cost of keeping them on Disney+ may not justify the viewership returns. This financial mismatch could be a significant factor in Disney’s decision-making process regarding content removal.

Deadline is reporting that, according to their sources, the removals occurred after a ‘library title review,’ which certainly suggests that this was a cost-cutting exercise.
