Disney is currently working on a sequel to 2007’s live-action “Enchanted” film titled “Disenchanted.” The movie will see the return of several characters from the original film including Giselle (Amy Adams), Robert (Patrick Dempsey), Prince Edward (James Marsden), and Nancy Tremaine (Idina Menzel).
Patrick Dempsey recently gave an interview with Variety where he shared some insights about the upcoming sequel for Disney+.
I’ve been talking to director [Adam Shankman]. The story is getting better and better. There’s a great cast coming together. And the musical numbers, I get to sing and dance. To work with everybody again after 14 years is just really exciting. We need some escapism right now. We need those romantic comedies and those musicals to get people out of the doldrums that we’re in.
When asked if he ever thought the sequel would eventually be made Dempsey responded,
Every year they were like, “We’re going to do this. It’s going to get done,” but then no one could agree on the script. It’s such an important film for them and it’s a satire. It’s not a typical Disney movie. It’s kind of off-brand a little bit. Yet we give honor to all of those Disney movies that have come before and they finally now have figured it out. And we’re old enough, so it’s like a midlife crisis movie.
The actor also revealed he would be singing for the first time.
I just finished Season 2 of “Devils” in Rome. Now I can focus 100% on that. I will be singing for the first time. I’ve never ever sung publicly — for a reason. So bear with me. I hope the fans embrace it. But they’ve set me up for success and the lyrics are really fun. The numbers have really great choreography. And the premise is going to be interesting.
The sequel will reportedly see Giselle, Robert, and Morgan moving to a new house in the suburbs, overseen by Malvina Monroe, the main villain of the film. After problems begin to arise, Giselle makes a wish to transform their lives into a perfect fairytale. However, the spell backfires dramatically and puts Giselle in a rush against the clock to save both her family and her Kingdom of Andalasia before the clock strikes midnight.
Just yesterday, it was announced that Maya Rudolph, Yvette Nicole Brown & Jayma Mays have joined the cast as well.
Adam Shankman (Hairspray) is set to direct. Brigette Hales is attached as a writer. Also returning are Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz to write new songs for the film.
Filming is set to begin this summer in Ireland and should wrap in August. A release date has not been set yet, but “Disenchanted” will most likely premiere on Disney+ in 2022.
