To coincide with the release of U2’s retrospective album Songs of Surrender on March 17th, Disney+ will be airing a documentary, travelogue, and concert film titled Bono & The Edge: A Sort of Homecoming With Dave Letterman. The film follows the band’s founding members, Bono and The Edge, as they embark on a nostalgic journey to their roots.
The film’s release is particularly significant as U2 prepares to unveil a collection of 40 re-recorded songs from their forty-year career. Through intimate interviews, footage of their early days, and stunning concert performances, Bono & The Edge: A Sort of Homecoming offers a unique insight into the formative experiences that shaped U2’s iconic sound.
David Letterman has a longstanding history with U2 dating back to his tenure as a late-night talk show host. However, the documentary chronicles Letterman’s first-ever visit to Dublin for a personal meeting with Bono and The Edge.
In the film, Letterman conducts interviews with both Bono and The Edge individually and together. Alongside his hosting duties, Letterman takes the opportunity to explore the city, visiting places that hold special meaning to both artists.
As Letterman immerses himself in the city, he also takes time to connect with the locals, offering them tickets to an exclusive performance by Bono and The Edge at the former Ambassador Cinema building.
The documentary includes live performances by Bono and The Edge, which showcase some of U2’s biggest hits, such as “Vertigo,” “Beautiful Day,” and “One.” Additionally, the documentary portion of the film includes archival footage of more than 20 additional songs, including videos of performances from the early days of U2.
Moreover, the film offers a delightful surprise for fans – a new song co-written by Bono and The Edge and inspired by David Letterman’s visit to Dublin. The song is a testament to the creative chemistry shared by the two artists and a testament to the powerful influence of Dublin on their music.
Overall, the film provides a comprehensive overview of U2’s incredible journey, highlighting their early struggles, the creative process behind their iconic sound, and their enduring impact on the music industry. By interweaving live performances, archival footage, and insightful interviews, the film offers an unparalleled glimpse into the personal and artistic lives of two of the most influential musicians of our time.
