Review: Disney+ Original Movie ‘Chang Can Dunk’

The Disney+ Original movie “Chang Can Dunk” premieres on the streaming platform on Friday, March 10, 2023.

Written and directed by Jingyi Shao, making his feature film debut, the inspiring coming-of-age sports comedy stars Bloom Li, Dexter Darden, Ben Wang, Zoe Renee, Chase Liefeld and Mardy Ma.

Official synopsis is below:

“Chang Can Dunk” follows Chang, a 16-year-old, Asian American high school student in the marching band, who bets the school basketball star that he can dunk by Homecoming. The bet leads the 5’ 8″ Chang on a quest to find the hops he needs to dunk in order to impress his crush, Kristy, and finally gain the attention and respect of his high school peers. But before he can rise up and truly throw one down, he’ll have to reexamine everything he knows about himself, his friendships and his family.

Cleverly edited, with a bumping soundtrack, “Chang Can Dunk” is not just another teen film with a focus on basketball but delivers a charming, funny, heart warming story that all audiences can connect with.  This movie exceeded all expectations.

Newcomer Bloom Li plays Chang, an endearing high schooler who just wants to be accepted and make a mark for himself.  After betting the school basketball star Matt that he can dunk in 12 weeks, Chang is determined to succeed at all costs.  Chang enlists the help of both his newfound basketball coach, Deandre played by Dexter Darden (The Maze Runner), who assigns Chang a grueling regimen, and his friend Bo played by Ben Wang (American Born Chinese) who documents the whole story on social media.  Chang embarks on achieving his goal while gaining confidence along the way.  During his journey, we see Chang striving for acceptance, trying to win the affection of the new girl in school, Kristy, and trying to repair his strained relationship with his mom.

“Chang Can Dunk” is not a story about winning a simple dunk bet.  It’s about self discovery, redemption, forgiveness, second chances, and ultimately… believing in yourself is the biggest win of all.  Every obstacle is an opportunity and it’s up to us to take it to another level.

The film’s producers are Rishi Rajani, Lena Waithe and Brad Weston, with Pamela Thur serving as executive producer.
