The five-episode streaming event spotlights Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox) as she is pursued by Wilson Fisk’s (Vincent D’Onofrio) criminal empire. When the journey brings her home, she must confront her own family and legacy.

“Echo” also stars Chaske Spencer (“Wild Indian,” “The English”), Graham Greene (“1883,” “Goliath”), Tantoo Cardinal (“Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Stumptown”), Devery Jacobs (FX’s “Reservation Dogs,” “American Gods”), Zahn McClarnon (“Dark Winds,” FX’s “Reservation Dogs”), Cody Lightning (“Hey, Viktor!” “Four Sheets to the Wind”) and Vincent D’Onofrio (“Hawkeye,” “Godfather of Harlem”).

Viewers were first introduced to Maya Lopez in Marvel’s Hawkeye series which debuted on Disney+ in November 2021.  Maya is a deaf gang leader who was determined to make Ronin aka Clint Barton pay for his own vengeful deeds. We last saw Maya trying to comprehend that her long-trusted friend and someone she considered an uncle was responsible for her father’s death.  This traitor happens to be criminal mastermind Wilson Fisk a.k.a. Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio) who was introduced in Marvel’s Daredevil series which first launched on Netflix but is now available to stream on Disney+.

Charlie Cox and Vincent D’onofrio both return in the new “Echo” series.  Charlie Cox originally played Matt Murdock/ Daredevil in the Marvel series on Netflix from 2015 to 2018.  He also appeared in the spinoff series, The Defenders. Most recently his character appeared in Marvel’s She-Hulk: Attorney at Law series on Disney+.  D’Onofrio also starred in Daredevil and most recently appeared as Kingpin/ Wilson Fisk in Marvel’s Hawkeye series on Disney+.  Both characters have deep connections to Maya Lopez/Echo in the comics.

One of the highlights of the series is watching the father-daughter dynamic unfold between Maya and Kingpin.  Much of D’Onofrio’s performance was unscripted which heightens this exploration of one of Marvel’s most well-loved brutal characters.

The series begins with flashbacks from Hawkeye and also intertwines Maya’s past and backstory. Now in the present day, Maya is on the run from a vengeful act she committed against Fisk.  She returns to her hometown and reconnects with her Native American roots and embraces the meaning of family and community in hopes of moving forward.

Alaqua Cox is a member of the Choctaw Nation, and director Sydney Freeland wanted the show to reflect her heritage.  For authenticity, Freeland and her team consulted with the Choctaw Nation regarding the history, costumes, and characters.  These aspects are beautifully incorporated and the series will also get a full audio dub in the Choctaw language.

The action sequences in the series are heart-pounding and captivating.  The complex fight scenes in the first episodes are perfectly executed like a well-rehearsed choreographed dance routine that will leave you mesmerized.

As Fisk so eloquently tells Maya after her father died, “You have to take the hurt, loss, pain and make it unto something useful,” which Maya takes to heart.  Although Maya might play a villainous character, you can’t help but root for her victory.

The theme song and score complement “Echo” so well.  The title track was written by the show’s composer Dave Porter.  Porter has previously worked on Breaking BadBetter Call SaulThe Disaster ArtistThe BlacklistPreacherHightown, and Term Life.

“Echo” is also historic as it offers many “firsts” for Marvel and Disney+.  It is the first show under the new Marvel Spotlight banner and the first to have TV-MA rating.  Additionally, the series features the first native American and deaf character and will be the first to launch simultaneously on Disney+ and Hulu.

Bottom Line: “Echo” presents fantastic, beloved characters with suspenseful action sequences. The series is dark, gritty, highly addictive and bingeable. No prior Marvel knowledge is needed to watch the series.  Just sit back and enjoy.

Episodes of the series are directed by Sydney Freeland (Navajo) and Catriona McKenzie (Gunaikurnai). Executive producers are Kevin Feige, Stephen Broussard, Louis D’Esposito, Brad Winderbaum, Victoria Alonso, Richie Palmer, Jason Gavin (Blackfeet), Marion Dayre and Sydney Freeland. Co-executive producers are Jennifer L. Booth and Amy Rardin.
