Review: Marvel’s ‘Stan Lee’ Documentary

Marvel’s “Stan Lee” documentary premieres exclusively on Disney+ on June 16, 2023.

From Marvel Studios and acclaimed director David Gelb, “Stan Lee” is the official documentary film about Stan “The Man” Lee and his journey to become one of the most influential people in the world of comic books and pop culture. Tracing his life from his challenging upbringing as Stanley Lieber to the meteoric rise of Marvel Comics, “Stan Lee” tells Stan’s story in his own words. Using only archival material—from personal home video, interviews and audio recordings—the film examines Stan’s origin story and what emerged from it: a far-reaching universe of stories with three-dimensional characters that have resonated with people all over the world. In this way, “Stan Lee” is both a story of comics and passion, and an intimate portrait of a man, his philosophy and its lasting impression.

The 90-minute documentary takes its viewers on a journey through Stan Lee’s life.  Lee’s voice provides the narrative using real footage and unique visuals to present the story while providing a historical and nostalgic look back in time.

The doc chronicles Lee’s childhood, how he came up with his pen name, how Spider-Man was inspired by a fly on the wall, the origins of Fantastic Four, Captain America, Iron Man, and so much more, all while navigating through cultural changes throughout the decades.  Lee, who was an avid reader himself,  wanted to create something that all readers could identify with.  His enthusiasm for storytelling was akin to Walt Disney and persevered through challenges to establish a franchise that has touched so many Marvel fans along the way.

The film is thought-provoking and fascinating.  Lee’s story is respectfully represented and incorporates the legacy he left behind.  Marvel fans and casual viewers will both delight at this beautiful look into Lee’s life who is one of the most influential icons of our lifetime.  Truly one of the best documentaries ever made.  Don’t miss it!
