The ten-episode series stars Sinclair Daniel, Ashleigh Murray, Brittany Adebumola, Hunter Parrish, Bellamy Young, Eric McCormack, and Garcelle Beauvais.
This review is based on all 10 episodes.
Sinclair Daniel plays Nella, an assistant editor navigating her way through Wagner Books with aspiring dreams to become an editor. Nella is a likable character who is extremely good at her job and we are instantly drawn in and want to see her ambitions recognized. When Hazel, played by Ashleigh Murray (Riverdale), joins the company, Nella welcomes the vibrant newcomer, but as certain events unfold, Nella’s world is turned upside down and we begin to wonder… is Hazel a friend or foe?
The series features brilliant, shiny, well-polished performances from the additional cast including Brittany Adebumola who plays Nella’s best friend and comedic sidekick, Hunter Parrish who plays Owen, Nella’s boyfriend, Bellamy Young (Scandal) who plays Nella’s over-the-top boss, Eric McCormack (Will & Grace), who plays Richard, the owner of Wagner Publishing, Garcelle Beauvais who plays the well-established author Diana Gordon and Brian Baumgartner (The Office) who plays a pompous writer.
“The Other Black Girl” is very different from a typical drama series. The show has many layers and as the mystery unfolds, each episode peels back another layer which incites more intrigue. By episode 5, the series really takes off and takes on the surprise of a suspenseful thriller complete with twists and turns which leaves you wanting more akin to a good book that you can’t put down.
Each episode is about 30 minutes long which makes this a good show to binge at 10 episodes. “The Other Black Girl” is fresh, deep, thought-provoking and most of all entertaining.
The music from the series is another stand-out favorite. EmmoLei Sankofa provides an enchanting score that follows the scenes harmoniously. Sankofa has previously worked on Step Up, Three Ways, Lizzo’s Watch Out For the Big Grrrls, and Horror Noire.
“The Other Black Girl” is executive produced by Rashida Jones, Adam Fishbach, Zakiya Dalila Harris, Jordan Reddout, Gus Hickey, Tara Duncan, and Temple Hill’s Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey. Jordan Reddout and Gus Hickey also serve as co-showrunners. “The Other Black Girl” is produced by Onyx Collective.
