All eight episodes of “Up Here” will release on Hulu in the United States and on Disney+ in many countries including the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand on Friday, March 24, 2023.
This review is based on all 8 episodes.
Mae Whitman (Good Girls) plays Lindsay who seems to be living a monotonous Groundhog Day life when she spontaneously moves to New York to follow her dreams of becoming a writer. Carlos Valdes (Gaslit) plays Miguel, a junior investment banker, who can seemingly make us feel every bit of emotion he’s feeling with just one look. The two meet by a chance encounter at a bar and its here their journey together begins. As their relationship develops, Lindsay and Miguel can’t seem to connect on the same frequency at the same time but the chemistry between the two is undeniable. As they push and pull and circle each other, it becomes apparent that they’re more alike than they realize and are destined to be with one another.
Lindsay and Miguel both carry “baggage” in their head. Imaginary voices of people they know who fill their heads with conflict, doubt, and maybe even keep them from making their own heart felt decisions. Who will win in the end?
“Up Here” has some real power house behind it. The series is written by Steven Levenson (“tick, tick…BOOM!”, “Dear Evan Hansen”) and Danielle Sanchez-Witzel (“The Carmichael Show”) with songwriting duo Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez (“Frozen,” “WandaVision”) writing original songs. “Hamilton’s” Thomas Kail directs and executive produces the series alongside Levenson, Sanchez-Witzel, Anderson-Lopez, Lopez, and Jennifer Todd.
Some songs fall a little flat but most are over the top fun and beautifully choreographed. A few tunes even carry a hook that will have you humming along afterward.
Overall, this series is delightful, exciting, funny and even suspenseful as we wait for Lindsay and Miguel to finally figure out what we’ve known all along. Fans who are missing Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, here’s your next binge! Can we get a sing along version?
