Last week Rick Riordan, who is the author of the Percy Jackson book series, shared on his blog that he had an important meeting with the top executives at Walt Disney Studios in the coming week regarding the “Percy Jackson & The Olympians” Disney+ series. The meeting took place on August 20th and Riordan updated his blog to provide his fans with another update saying they had a very positive conversation.
We had a very positive conversation yesterday (Friday, Aug. 20) with the top executives at the various branches of the Disney television organization: Disney Entertainment, Disney TV, 20th Century Studios and Disney+ .
He went on to say that leadership is “all in” and they felt supported and heard.
The good news is: the leadership is “all in,” as they put it, about making this show and doing it right. A lot of them have kids who have grown up with Percy Jackson, too, so they get it. They get that there are millions and millions of you out there who are waiting excitedly to see Percy Jackson come to life in a new way. We felt supported and heard, and I am more confident than ever that this show is moving forward as it needs to.
He also added that they still don’t have an official green light for the series, but are working on it.
We still do not have an official green light. I did not expect that from this meeting. We do, however, have clear marching orders about what the execs need to see from us in order to grant that green light, and we are working to get them those materials. Again, this is all totally reasonable.
Riordan’s wife, Becky also took to Twitter to say that one meeting turned into 5 more. You can read that tweet below:
One meeting turned into 5 and we are not done yet. Monday here we come! Rick and I want to remind you all that without books and readers of books this would never be a thing. Celebrating fans! Celebrating books! Have a great weekend and stay safe y’all! https://t.co/LPuDcj63yj

Last month, it was revealed that the writer’s room began and it was announced that Jonathan E. Steinberg, who is also a writer on the series, and Dan Shotz (Black Sails, Jericho) are on board as showrunners.
Additional writers include Daphne Olive, who has worked with Steinberg and Shots on Black Sails, Monica Owusu-Breen (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Alias), and Joe Tracz (A Series of Unfortunate Events). Also part of the mix of assistants are Xavier Stiles (Hemlock Grove), Zoë Neary (Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency), and Stewart Strandberg (The Old Man).
Once the series is greenlit, production and casting will begin soon after.
The Percy Jackson series is set to follow the storyline of the five books starting with The Lightening Thief which centers around a teenager who discovers that he is a descendent of a Greek God. The series will then take on a new book for every season.
A release date has not been announced yet, but Season 1 which will consist of 8 episodes and is expected to debut on Disney+ sometime in 2023.
