Back in November, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Disney is working on a new installment of “The Princess Diaries,” which sources say is a continuation of the Anne Hathaway-led series of films rather than a reboot.
Currently, it’s unclear if the movie is intended as a theatrical release or for Disney+ but Daniel RPK, an industry insider, reports that the upcoming third installment of the franchise will portray Anne Hathaway’s character, Mia Thermopolis, from the first two movies, as the Queen of the fictional European kingdom of Genovia. Hathaway has not been confirmed for the project but the actress has expressed interest. Furthermore, the movie will reportedly introduce a new princess character who could be played by Zendaya. Julie Andrews is not attached to return and the Disney Legend has expressed that it is not likely.
Sandra Oh however is open to return. In a recent interview with EW, the actress revealed the following:
“I’m dying to see how Gupta has moved up in the world. I am ready for the Queen. Call me! I’m dying to see how Gupta has moved up in the world.”
It’s believed that Debra Martin Chase, who produced the first two Princess Diaries, is producing the new film. Melissa Stack, the screenwriter behind the Cameron Diaz comedy The Other Woman and the 2020 Disney+ feature Godmothered, is executive producing.
Both “Princess Diaries” films are available to stream on Disney+.
