Searchlight Pictures’ new musical comedy film “Theater Camp” will release in theaters on July 14, 2023. The studio acquired the Sundance crowd-pleaser last January.
“Theater Camp” is an adaptation of Nick Lieberman’s 2020 short film of the same name and follows longtime best friends who return to an upstate run down theater camp which is imperiled when its founder lapses into a coma due to an unfortunate strobe light incident. Her son takes over, and he tries to stave off foreclosure even though he initially has little interest in greasepaint and the boards.
The film stars Molly Gordon, Ben Platt, Amy Sedaris, Jimmy Tatro, Patti Harrison, Ayo Edebiri, Owen Thiele, and “Minari”s Alan Kim.
The feature is directed by Gordon and Nick Lieberman. Gordon and Lieberman wrote the script with Ben Platt and Noah Galvin.
Erik Feig, Samie Kim Falvey and Julia Hammer produced the project for Picturestart; Maria Zuckerman and Ryan Heller produced for Topic Studios; and Will Ferrell, Jessica Elbaum, Alex Brown and Mary Bundy produced for Gloria Sanchez Productions.
