Shakira Barrera (Sprung, GLOW) has joined the cast of Marvel’s upcoming “Ironheart” series as a series regular.
Not much is known about the new “Ironheart” series but the show will feature Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams, a genius inventor who creates the most advanced suit of armor since Iron Man. Marvel’s Ironheart character follows Riri Williams, a 15-year old engineering genius attending Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Riri builds a suit based on Iron Man’s armor and takes up the name Ironheart. The character has appeared in some Marvel animated series including Spider-Man: Maximum Venom and Marvel Rising.
Thorne will be making her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever which will release in theaters this November.
Anthony Ramos (The Heights, Hamilton) is set for a key role in the series and could be the show’s villain and Lyric Ross (This Is Us) will play Williams’ best friend. Additionally, newcomer Harper Anthony, Manny Montana (Good Girls), Zoe Terakes (Nine Perfect Strangers, Wentworth), Regan Aliyah (XO, Kitty) and RuPaul’s Drag Race Winner, Shea Couleé have joined the cast in unknown roles.
Chinaka Hodge (Snowpiercer) will serve as head writer for the series. Sam Bailey and Angela Barnes will direct.
Coogler, Zinzi Coogler, Sev Ohanian and Chinaka Hodge will serve as executive producers alongside Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Brad Winderbaum, and Zoie Nagelhout.
Filming on the series is currently underway in Chicago. Marvel’s “Ironheart” will reportedly consist of 6 episodes and will be coming to Disney+ in Fall 2023.
Barrera is known for playing Yolanda in GLOW and Lulu in It’s Bruno, both for Netflix. Other TV credits include TNT’s Animal Kingdom, Showtime’s Shameless, and USA Network’s Queen of the South.
