‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ Expected To Break Labor Day Box Office Records

Marvel Studios will release its next film “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” exclusively in theaters on Friday, September 3rd. Currently, the movie is predicted to earn over $45 million at the domestic box office and $90 million globally which would break Labor Day Box Office records.  The current record holder for the extended Labor Day weekend is $30.6 million which is held by Rob Zombie’s 2007 remake of Halloween.

According to pre-sales, Shang-Chi could end up raking in somewhere between $45 million and $50 million over the weekend in the United States and Canada.  Add in the predicted $40 million from international markets, and Shang-Chi would be able to reach $90 million globally.

Marvel’s last theatrical release was Black Widow which reached an impressive $215 million on opening weekend which makes Shang Chi’s expectations seem a little low. However, Black Widow was also released on Disney+ Premier Access for an additional fee.  Historically, tentpole films don’t release on Labor Day weekend due to the belief fewer people will attend as moviegoers are dealing with kids going back to school or enjoying one of the last weekends of summer outdoors.  Concerns over the Delta variant and a film featuring a new Marvel character who isn’t as well known as other superheroes could also affect the outcome of the box office numbers.

Shang-Chi follows the title character who must confront the past he thought he left behind when he is drawn into the web of the mysterious Ten Rings organization.

The film is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and produced by Kevin Feige and Jonathan Schwartz, with Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, and Charles Newirth serving as executive producers. David Callaham & Destin Daniel Cretton & Andrew Lanham wrote the screenplay for the film.

The movie stars Simu Liu, Tony Leung as Wenwu, Awkwafina as Shang-Chi’s friend Katy, and Michelle Yeoh as Jiang Nan, as well as Fala Chen, Meng’er Zhang, Florian Munteanu, and Ronny Chieng.
