Disney is reportedly working on a new movie based on another beloved theme park attraction, Space Mountain. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Joby Harold is already attached to write the script, who has worked a range of movies from Zack Snyder’s upcoming Army of the Dead to Warner’s King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, and most recently the upcoming Star Wars Obi-Wan Kenobi series for Disney+. Harold will also produce the live-action adaptation with partner and wife Tory Tunnell and their Safehouse Pictures banner. Also producing is Rideback, run by Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich and was behind Disney’s billion dollar-grossing Aladdin.
In case you aren’t familiar, Space Mountain is an indoor roller coaster set in outer space which first debuted in Florida’s Walt Disney World Resort in 1975. The attraction then launched at Disneyland Resort in 1977 and is now in five of the six Disney parks around the world.
Disney also just recently confirmed a new live-action “The Haunted Mansion” movie is also in development with Katie Dippold (Ghostbusters 2016) attached to write the script.
Other Disney attractions that were inspired into films include the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise which have been a huge success, “Country Bears” and the upcoming “Jungle Cruise” film set to release on July 30, 2021.
The new “Space Mountain” film is set to be a theatrical release rather than a Disney+ Original Movie.
