It’s Star Wars Day, and Disney has announced some very exciting Star Wars news today. Academy Award winner Taika Waititi, will direct and co-write a new Star Wars feature film for theatrical release!
Waititi recently won Best Adapted Screenplay for Jojo Rabbit and directed the first season finale episode of The Mandalorian on Disney+. He also directed Thor: Ragnarok and is next set to direct Thor: Love and Thunder for Marvel Studios, which is now scheduled to open on Feb. 18, 2022.
Joining Waititi on the screenplay will be Academy Award nominee Krysty Wilson-Cairns, who won a BAFTA Award for Outstanding British Film of the Year on the three-time Oscar-winning film 1917.
We also recently learned a Star Wars series is in development at Disney+ with Leslye Headland as showrunner and writer. Headland is the co-creator, showrunner, and executive producer of the Netflix series Russian Doll. Details of the plot are under wraps but sources say it will be a female-driven action-thriller with martial arts elements that takes place in a different part of the Star Wars timeline than other projects.
These projects join the list of other Star Wars stories at Disney+, including Disney Legend Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian, now in post-production on season two, and two previously ordered series: one based on Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) prior to the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and one following the adventures of Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) between Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: A New Hope.
