Last month, the first teaser trailer dropped for Disney and Pixar’s upcoming animated film “Lightyear.” The teaser rocketed to 83 million views in its first 24 hours setting a second-place best for Pixar. The film trailed only behind Incredibles 2 which saw 114M. “Lightyear” even beat out Marvel’s “Eternals” trailer which was released in May with over 77 million views in the first 24 hours.
The sci-fi action-adventure presents the definitive origin story of Buzz Lightyear—the hero who inspired the toy—introducing the legendary Space Ranger who would win generations of fans.
Chris Evans lends his voice to Buzz and according to The DisInsider, Taika Waititi will also have a voice role in the Toy Story spinoff. DisInsider states Taika Waititi’s role is being kept under wraps, however, the role is being described as a “Sidekick to Buzz Lightyear”. We can confirm the role is not for Zurg, who we can confirm makes an appearance in the film.
Waititi has a long history with Disney. The filmmaker voiced IG-11 in Season one of Star Wars: The Mandalorian and also directed the season 1 finale of the hit Disney+ series. He’s also set to direct his very own Star Wars movie in the future and Disney’s Tower of Terror movie starring Scarlett Johannson. For Marvel, Waititi directed Thor: Ragnarok, the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder film and much more.
Annie Award-winning director and veteran Pixar animator Angus MacLane helms “Lightyear.” Galyn Susman produces.
“Lightyear” launches into theaters on June 17, 2022.
