How does the deal between Sony and Marvel/Disney work?
For those unaware, Sony owns the film rights to “Spider-Man” movies and can keep them as long as it releases a movie every five years. Disney and Sony struck a deal back in 2015, allowing Spider-Man to appear in the MCU. The agreement means that Sony would retain distribution rights to the character’s solo movies, while Disney would earn a percentage of box-office gross and all merchandising revenue.
In April, Sony and Disney reached a deal for “post-Pay 1” distribution of various Sony Pictures titles which also included Sony library titles. The deal also specifically called out Spider-Man movies.
Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man Movies Disney Plus Release Date?
At the moment, there has been no news on if or when Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3 will be making an appearance on Disney+.
While we don’t know the specifics and likely won’t for a while, we don’t imagine that we’ll be seeing any of the Spider-Man movies arriving anytime soon. Again, we don’t know the deal’s specifics, so any guesses are just that.
As of writing, Raimi‘s Spider-Man movies are available on Peacock in the United States. It’s possible when this deal expires, these movies will finally make a move over to Disney+. The good news is that we fully expect to see these movies on Disney+, but the big question, which is unfortunately unanswered, is when.
Internationally, things are even more complex for Spider-Man. The deal between Disney and Sony was created just for the United States, and each country has different contracts, especially with Netflix. While arrangements could be put in place for some of the larger markets, it’s unlikely we’ll see ‘Spider-Man’ arrive on Disney+ internationally anytime soon.
