Will The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Come to Disney Plus?
Yes! In April 2021, Sony and Disney reached a deal for “post-Pay 1” distribution of various Sony Pictures titles means one thing: Sony’s Spider-Man movies will eventually take there rightful place within the Marvel section on Disney+.
This arrangement encompasses not just 2022 releases, which will arrive on Disney+ after their stint on Netflix, but also earlier Spider-Man films from Sony’s extensive collection.
So, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is coming to Disney+, but the biggest question remaining is when.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Disney Plus Release Date
Disney has yet to confirm the arrival of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 on Disney+ in the United States, but it is anticipated to appear in late 2023.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is currently available on Starz in the United States, which explains its unavailability on Disney+. Once that contract has expired, we’re expecting that the movie will move over to Disney+ in late 2023.
It’s possible that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will arrive on Disney+ in late 2023 after Sony promised more Spider-Man movies will come to Disney+ later this year:
“Additional titles from Sony Pictures’ film and television library are expected to premiere on Disney+ in the U.S. later this year.”
We’ll be sure to update this article the moment Disney has confirmed an official Disney+ release date for The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
Sony & Disney Deal Explained
The deal is between Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) and Disney. It covers all future SPE releases from 2022 to 2026, allowing them to appear on Disney’s platforms in the US. This means services like Disney+ and Hulu, as well as the linear networks: ABC, Fox, FX, Freeform and National Geographic. Importantly, Hulu also has access to some SPE titles from as early as June 2021.
What is also key to remember is that Disney has the rights to the US “post-Pay 1 window” exhibition. What does that mean?
-
- Theatrical: 90 days pre-Covid, exclusive in theatres
- DVD/VOD: able to purchase and own a copy of the film
- SVOD/Pay 1: able to stream the title through a streaming service or “Pay TV” provider, such as Starz, HBO, etc.
- Network/Pay 2: able to air on TV networks; may also be available on a streaming service that is either the same as Pay 1 or different
While Netflix got the rights for the US Pay 1 window, the Disney and Sony deal is for the US Pay 2 window. This means that, when a(n) SPE title debuts in theatres, it will go from theatres, to (P)VOD, to Netflix, and then to Disney. Disney can then place that title on its services indefinitely and can also air that title on its linear channels.
