Why Was “Flora & Ulysses” Removed From Disney Plus?

As part of its ongoing cost-cutting strategy, Disney removed Flora & Ulysses from Disney+ worldwide as of May 27.

“Flora & Ulysses” premiered exclusively on Disney+ back in February 19, 2021.

The film is based on the Newbery Award-winning book about 10-year-old Flora, an avid comic book fan and a self-avowed cynic, whose parents have recently separated. After rescuing a squirrel she names Ulysses, Flora is amazed to discover he possesses unique superhero powers, which take them on an adventure of humorous complications that ultimately change Flora’s life–and her outlook–forever.

Why Was ‘Flora & Ulysses’ Removed From Disney Plus?

Disney decided to remove Flora & Ulysses from Disney+ because of its low viewership. The company didn’t see the cost of maintaining the movie as justified, particularly while it’s aiming to save $5 billion through cost-cutting measures.
Disney still bears ongoing costs to keep movies like Flora & Ulysses on Disney+. By eliminating certain titles, Disney can save money, as it no longer needs to make residual payments and pay licensing fees.

Additionally, removing content also opens up opportunities for Disney to establish licensing agreements for these shows/movies with other companies, like Netflix or HBO, which could generate additional revenue.

Will ‘Flora & Ulysses’ Come Back To Disney Plus?

Due to a content impairment charge that Disney has implemented, which serves as a write-off for tax purposes, Flora & Ulysses is unable to return to Disney+.

When the impairment period ends, Disney could theoretically bring Flora & Ulysses back to Disney+. Nonetheless, considering Disney’s stance that the continuous costs of hosting the title on Disney+ aren’t justified, and given the prior low viewership, a surge in viewership upon re-introduction on Disney+ appears highly unlikely. Therefore, the likelihood of Flora & Ulysses making a comeback is incredibly small.

Where To Watch Flora & Ulysses

Currently, there are no alternative streaming platforms or purchase options available for Flora & Ulysses.
Disney’s decision to remove content parallels a preceding action by Warner Bros. Discovery, headed by David Zaslav, which also pulled a selection of titles from (HBO) Max. The company subsequently granted Roku and Tubi the rights to many of these shows through a number of licensing agreements, thereby further monetizing programming that had previously failed to achieve expected success.

It’s unclear whether Disney will license the movie to another streaming service, as that would depend on the interest of other platforms. However, it’s certainly a possibility that Disney will follow a similar path to Warner.

Similarly, there’s uncertainty about if or when Disney might offer Flora & Ulysses for digital purchase.

If and when Flora & Ulysses is made available on another streaming service or available to purchase, we’ll be sure to update this article.

What Other Titles Have Been Removed From Disney Plus?

Disney has pulled over 100 titles in total from Disney+, such as Willow, Better Nate Than Ever, Turner & Hooch, The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, Just Beyond, Diary of a Future President, Big Shot, and The World According To Jeff Goldblum, and many more.

  1. We homeschool and it’s part of our educational study to compare the book to the movie. We would really like to watch it. We are almost done with the book.

  2. I know of at least two major school districts in Pennsylvania (State College School District and Southern York County School District) that have changed their elementary schools English and Language Arts curriculum to include a program called HMH. Within this curriculum, the very first book that they are studying is Flora and Ulysses. The teachers have been trying to find the movie to accompany the book as a supplement to their lessons and it isn’t available anywhere. Please bring it back to Disney Plus! If these two districts are using the same curriculum, certainly others are as well. The movie would be a great addition and culmination to their lessons plans! Thank you!

  3. I’m furious about this. No wonder Disney is failing so monumentally right now. This movie was fantastic. Disney has return to oz but not Flora and Ulysses? Talk about idiotic, are you actively trying to kill your brand? At least release these titles for purchase on dvd or something like that. Don’t blame your marketing failures on viewers. What the brand did with the owl house, early cancellation, and Marvel, live action remakes, are yet another example of Disney having no clue what they are doing.
