Will “Free Guy” Be On Disney Plus?

Twentieth Century Studio’s epic adventure-comedy “Free Guy” has been an enormous hit, and understandably, fans are eager to know when the movie will be available to stream on Disney+… or any streaming service for that matter.

“Free Guy,” a bank teller who discovers he is actually a background player in an open-world video game decides to become the hero of his own story…one he rewrites himself. Now in a world where there are no limits, he is determined to be the guy who saves his world his way…before it is too late.

The movie stars Ryan Reynolds, Jodie Comer, Joe Keery, Lil Rel Howery, Utkarsh Ambudkar and Taika Waititi. Directed by Shawn Levy from a story by Matt Lieberman and a screenplay by Lieberman and Zak Penn.

When is Free Guy Coming To Disney Plus?

The good news is that “Free Guy” will likely come to Disney+ in the United States. The bad news is that this won’t happen for several years.

“Free Guy” falls under the Disney umbrella after the Walt Disney Company purchased 20th Century Fox. The movie is also rated PG13, another tick for the film to be added to Disney+.

Unfortunately, due to pre-existing contracts before the acquisitions of Fox, “Free Guy” will head to HBO Max to fulfil its pay one window. This means it will be a minimum of 18 months before “Free Guy” can contractually be added to Disney+. It’s also possible that are other unknown contracts which could extend this longer.

However, these contracts will expire at some point in the future, and “Free Guy” will find a new home on Disney+ (Or Hulu) in the United States.

When is Free Guy Coming To Disney Plus UK / Internationally?

“Free Guy” is much more likely to arrive on Disney+ internationally thanks to the addition of the “Star” brand and much less red tape with contracts.

Disney hasn’t made any specific announcements for any regions, including the UK, Canada and Australia; we could potentially see “Free Guy” arrive as soon as the 45-day theatre exclusive window is up at the end of September.

Disney may decide to release the movie for digital rentals and purchases before releasing it on Disney+.

We could start to see “Free Guy” appearing in certain regions such as the UK, Canada and Australia before the end of the year.

We’ll update the article the moment we hear news!

Update: Disney has announced that “Free Guy” will be coming to Disney+ in Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Ireland and Canada on Wednesday, September 29, 2021.

Can you purchase “Free Guy” On Disney Plus Premier Access?

“Free Guy” isn’t available to purchase on Disney+ Premier Access in any region. This is because of pre-existing contracts created before Disney purchased 20th Century Fox, along with the fact that Disney signed a 45-day exclusive contract with movie theater chains. While this only applies to the United States, Disney hasn’t yet released a premier access movie internationally without also having it available in the US.

Is “Free Guy” On Netflix?

“Free Guy” is not currently available to stream on Netflix and it’s unlikely to ever make an appearance. The movie will head to HBO Max in the United States and then it should eventually find a permanent home on Disney+ or Hulu.

Free Guy HBO Max Release Date

Even though “Free Guy” falls under the Disney umbrella after the Walt Disney Company purchased 20th Century Fox, the movie will head to HBO first due to pre-existing contracts. An exact release date hasn’t been announced at this time.

  1. Just got an email from Disney+ in Aus saying FreeGuy is coming in September. No indication if its Premier Access or the main service. The COVID situation here has meant cinemas were largely closed when it came out.
